Cavities: The Facts You Should Know

Posted .

What keeps people from having a cavity filled? Generally, the answer comes down to one of two important issues: fear of the dentist or concern about the cost of the treatment. However, if you have a cavity filled, there are a few reasons you should get it filled immediately.

You see, cavities are formed by tooth decay and erosion over time. Typically, this decay is the result of bad bacteria in your mouth eating away at your dentin and enamel, which are the outer layers of your teeth. Fortunately, by brushing and flossing, you can remove this harmful bacteria before it causes serious problems. As you probably know, this is one reason daily oral care is so important to the health of your mouth.

As you probably know, problems with cavities usually start when you neglect brushing and flossing. However, did you know that you won’t be able to reverse the damage caused by a cavity after it’s formed, even with brushing and flossing? Fortunately, you can choose to have a filling placed, which will restore the functionality of your tooth and stop decay from spreading further.

Fortunately, dental treatment have come far in the last decade. Now, having a cavity filled is usually painless and fairly fast. In other words, please don’t let dental anxiety stop you from having your cavity filled. Similarly, price shouldn’t be your main concern because, most insurance plans will cover a simple cavity with only a small co-pay. Conversely, many companies will not pay for a root canal or a crown. In other words, these treatments can be extremely expensive—but you may be able to avoid them by having your cavities filled and by visiting your dentists for routine checkups.
