Choosing the Right Toothbrush

Posted .

5,000 years ago, people used bones, sticks, and even ivory to clean their teeth. Fortunately, toothbrushes have improved since then. Unfortunately, there are now dozens of toothbrushes to choose from, making it more difficult to choose the one that is best for you. With all of the options available, do you know which toothbrush is best for you? To help you make a good decision, we’re happy to list a few things you should consider.

Are You Going to Like It? Arguably, the best toothbrush for your needs will be the toothbrush you enjoy using. For example, you may find the buzzing electric toothbrush uncomfortable, or maybe the vibrations will help you. If you enjoy your toothbrush, you will be more likely to clean your teeth for the recommended two minutes.

Will It Clean Well? Brushing and flossing is very important for protecting your smile, and your toothbrush should help. If you purchase a toothbrush with a large head, you may have a hard time reaching each tooth. You should also consider choosing a toothbrush with soft bristles. Using harder bristles may damage your gums if you brush too hard.

Is It Your Safest Option? While it is important to buy a toothbrush with the ADA Seal of Approval, some individuals may be safer with a specific type of toothbrush. For instance, an electric toothbrush may be gentler on your gums and keep your mouth safe. Conversely, an electric toothbrush might cause issues for people with heart disease. Please speak to your dentist for more specific advice.
